Some issues such as less intensive utilization, scattershot distribution and difficult to manage etc. become the focus on Rural Residential Plots (RRPs) with the idea of promoting intensive and economic use of land resources. To solve these problems, land reclamation based on optimizing spatial distribution of the RRPs is considered one of the most practical way as well as a chance for facilitating a new engine to boom rural economy. The authors take Nanhui region in Shanghai, China as a case for seeking synergy to optimize the use of RRPs at urban fringe. The results of spatial distribution random test and cluster analysis show that: the pattern of spatial distribution at Nanhui region is not random; and the RRPs can be categorized into two types which are awayfromthecenter type and centralized type based on the standard deviation and Euclidean distance. Accordingly, we formulate two synergies for improving efficiency of the RRPs utilization at the fringe of Shanghai.
