The distribution of population is of great importance to regional economic studies, which helps to reveal the characteristics and the development trends of
regional spatial structure. This paper takes samples of thirty five counties in LanzhouXining city region, which is the only one comparative integrated river basin
units in the northern west part of China. Exploratory spatial data analysis was used to examine the population distribution characteristics of research units, and
three high population density centers were found. To make sure which regional density function is more appropriate for LanzhouXining area, firstly the gravitybased
model is used to delineate the radiation scope of those three high population density centers and then the squareroot negative exponential density function is found
out to be the best one in explaining the population distribution of research units. Since the monocentric regional density have limits in polycentric regions, such as
LanzhouXining city region, the polycentric regional density based on the squareroot negative exponential density function is used to examine the characteristic and
the development trends of concentration and decentralization of population in this area. And we find there are two different models of concentration and
decentralization of population in research units, namely, the concentration pattern, such as Lanzhou downtown area and Xining downtown area, and the dispersion pattern
through weaken center such as Linxia City.
